Mamma Mia! A musical with a disco beat featuring 23 hit songs by the Swedish pop group ABBA. Writer Catherine Johnson's sunny, funny tale unfolds on a tiny Greek island. On the eve of her wedding, a daughter's quest to discover the identity of her father brings 3 men from her mother's past back to the island they last visited 20 years ago.
Wed, Mar 16, 8-10pm: Jazz night
Iridium Jazz Club: Steve Smith and Buddy's Buddies. This is a celebration of the music and spirit of one of the greatest jazz musicians the world has ever seen, Buddy Rich. While there have been many tributes to the legendary Buddy Rich, this is the first by a small group comprised entirely of Buddy Rich alumni. This new band is carrying on the best of the Buddy Rich traditions; communicating with music lovers of all generations, striving for excellence and playing non-compromising, burning, straight ahead jazz. COST: $27.50, plus $10 food/drink minimum. Students get 50% discount.
Thu, Mar 17, 10am-2pm: Guided Walking Tour I
A Manhattan Sampler: A 3-4 hour trip, which includes a couple of subway rides. An excellent way to experience New York if this is your first time here and you'd like to get the lay of the land—or, if you'd simply like to experience as much of the city as possible in one tour. The tour begins at the southern tip of the island, where the Native Americans blazed the trail that would become Broadway and heads uptown. Participants generally visit five neighborhoods (Battery Park/Financial District, The Civic Center, Greenwich Village, Midtown, and Central Park), transporting between stops on the subway. COST: $25, plus subway fares ($2 per ride).
Thu, Mar 17, 3-5pm: Guided Walking Tour II
Exploring Historic Chinatown/Little Italy: This 2-hour trip traces the history of the Lower East Side, including Chinatown and Little Italy, from the establishment of farms along the Bowery by the Dutch West India Company in the 1620s, and the Irish Five Points neighborhood, to its present life as the largest Chinese community in America. COST: $12.50 per person.
Thu, Mar 17, 9-11pm: Comedy Club
Stand-Up NY Comedy Club: This 2-hour show will feature 4-6 rising talents, many of whom have been on Letterman and The Tonight Show. In the recent past, drop-ins have included Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld and Robin Williams. COST: $10, plus 2 drink minimum.
