Accomodations for ASYNC 2005

Because of the variety of hotel options in NYC, and the varied needs of different attendees, and the difficulty in NYC of reserving large blocks of hotel rooms (without significant financial risks and penalties for IEEE), we are following the lead of other major NYC research conferences (such as ACM Multimedia 2004) by offering 2 options to attendees.

Option 1: Reserve a guest room near Columbia University. Right near the symposium site, there are approximately 40-50 guest rooms (all with private baths), within easy walking distance. These rooms are all comfortable but simple (better than dormitories, less fancy than hotel rooms). All have private baths. Some are single rooms, others accommodate 2-5 people.

The sites are at 3 affiliated institutions:

At Union Theological Seminary, there are approximately 20-25 guest rooms, but no group block reservation. We STRONGLY recommend that you reserve as early as possible.

In the International House and in Teachers College, there are over 20 guest rooms. These are all reserved under a group reservation until 1 month prior to the symposium. WE also STRONGLY recommend that you reserve quickly.

NOTE: each of the guest rooms has different policies on check-in. Their web sites provide more details.

ALSO NOTE: the rooms in Union Theological Seminary are likely to disappear quickly, since we do not have a block reservation. I suggest you reserve very soon. While we have reserved blocks of rooms in the International House and Teachers College, these are also likely to disappear early.

Option 2: Make your own reservations for a hotel room. We have assembled a list of easily-accessible hotels, mostly in the Upper West Side, within a 15-20 minute subway ride and walk to Columbia University. You may also want to find hotels on your own (using expedia.com, hotels.com, etc.).

This approach of allowing attendees to fill their own needs (based on desire for proximity to symposium site, lower rates, etc.) was successful at the recent ACM Multimedia Conference, and is most suitable for a New York City-based conference.

Some of the nearby hotels have rooms for $145-190/night, plus tax. Rates vary, and promotional or discount offers are available.
