    I had exactly the same problem and your intutition is correct.
    
    You need to use a three button mouse and you need to comment out the
    Emulate3Buttons option in /etc/X11/XF86Config. It worked like a charm for
    me when I did that.  
    
    I am running on Mandrake 7.0, but this is quite RedHat-like so I imagine
    the same solution should work for you.

    ps.  I wasn't using ChordMiddle, but the comments in the XF86Config seem
    to indicate this is for Logitech mice.
