    Hi,
With help from the suggested steps I can now read the gdsii file into
magic. With the help of a layer map I have now been able to get the gds
layers assigned to the proper predefined layers in the nmos display file
following magic. So far, so good, but when I open magic -w -Tmytech in an
xterm on pc running xwin-32 5.4 I get the following message:

    Magic 7.2 - Compiled on Mon Mar 3 11:00:08 MET 2003.
    Using Tk console window
Using PseudoColor, VisualID 0x21 depth 8
Unable to allocate 7 planes in default colormap; making a new one.
    Using technology "scmos", version 8.2.8.
MOSIS Scalable CMOS Technology for Standard Rules
New windows will not have a title caption.
New windows will not have scroll bars.
Repainting console in magic layout window colors
Warning: Cannot match colormap of wrapper to layout.
    Main console display active (Tcl8.4.1 / Tk8.4.1)

And the layer buttons in the main frame are all black and white. The layout
    itself has colors.

If I start magic the same way on debian KDE 3.1 in 16-bit color mode I get
the colors right in layout and buttons. but the open layout dialog does not
show up and hang the whole app.

On a CDE console the color reallocation really mess up all colors.

I see there is a 25 bit and a 7 bit version of the display files. What
happens when my x-server has 16 bit color planes?
