Dear John:
I can only suggest what I have heard Tim suggest earlier this month to
someone else. That is to compile with the simplest options and build upon
that. That would mean in the make config step to select none of the optional
modules and to compile both with and without tcl support. One thing that is
quite curious is the missing tut11a.rsm in your listing. I think that is the
rsim file generated during the tutorial (see tutorial 11 page 2). I have
never seen any issue any of the magic versions with the tutorials during the
compilation. As far as I know, those are just a straight copy from the doc
directory to the lib/magic directory structure. I can tell you that I have
compiled magic7.2.32 with all of its options (in fact, I do that with all of
Tims versions as a QA test) and the compile proceeds quite cleanly. I am
using a straight RH8 system for this work, but there should be no issues
with Debian.
