On the very good news front, a download of magic-7.2.40.tgz to the
traditional /home/cad on my main magic system (RH8 also), with the following
invocations

tar -xvzf magic-7.2.40.tgz
cd magic-7.2.40
make config
#select tcl, X11 & openGL seperated by a space, all the rest defualt
make tcl
make install-tcl

compiles and installs without one single error. Kudus to Tim.
