I've also used newer Unix versions successfully. hmm, layers not displaying correctly suggests that you haven't recompiled magic to extend the number of 'types' (loosely corresponds to layers) that magic uses. the readme discusses this, in the context of getting errors loading the techfile, eg: ftp://ftp.isi.edu/pub/sondeen/magic/new/README ... 4. What to do if you get these errors when magic starts up: XXX.tech27: line xx: section planes: Too many tile planes (max=20) XXX.tech27: line xx: section cifinput: XXX.tech27: line xx: section xxx: XXX.tech27: line xx: section cifoutput: it sounds like you can NOT get these errors, but still have a too low limit on the number of 'types' (as that's usually a symptom of not enough 'types', ie. when layer 'type' numbers are 'wrapping' around to lower numbered types). in that case, you might try using the 'light' version SCNA.80.light.tech27 which reduces the number of 'types' used (such as not defined types for 'resistor' marker layers). /jeff
