Research:

"In anything at all, perfection is finally attained not when there is no longer anything to add, but when there is no longer anything to take away." The Little Prince, Antoine de Saint-Exupery

I primarily work on asynchronous VLSI design and architecture. I am also interested in a number of other subjects including concurrency, formal methods, programming language semantics, information theory, and cognitive systems.

Teaching:
I will be teaching a new class, ECE 571 (Arithmetic Circuits) in Fall 2008.

I've taught EE/CS 314 (Computer Organization, S2000, S2001), EE 571 (Asynchronous VLSI Design, F1998, F1999, F2000), ECE 474 (Digital VLSI Design, F2001, F2002, F2003), ECE 574 (Advanced Digital VLSI Design, S2002, S2003, S2004, F2004, F2007), ECE 697 (Topics in Computer Systems, F2002), and ECE 320 (Systems and Networks, S2005). I've been involved with EE 475 (Computer Architecture, F1999), EE 439/539 (VLSI Digital System Design, F1998), and EE 308 (Fundamentals of Computer Engineering, S1999).

At Caltech, I was part of the teaching staff for CS/EE 181 (Digital VLSI Design Laboratory), and was an instructor for CS 139 (Concurrency in Computation). I've been a teaching assistant for CS 20 (Computers, Computation, and Programs), CS 185 (Asynchronous VLSI design laboratory), and CS 237 (Design and Implementation of Programming Languages).

In terms of why I teach classes the way I do, I like some of the opinions in EWD 1305.

At Cornell, I've received the Tau Beta Pi and Cornell Society of Engineers Excellence in Teaching Award (2000), the IEEE Teacher of the Year Award (2001), the Sonny Yau '72 Excellence in Teaching Award (2001), the Michael Tien '72 Excellence in Teaching Award (2004), and the Ruth and Joel Spira Excellence in Teaching Award (2005).

Personal:

You can find out a bit about me if you like. Here are some quotations, puzzles, and poems. Some local FreeBSD tweaks.
