I am the person responsible for adding the 'parent' and 'child'
commands (as well as a few others), and its true that I did not update
    the documentation accordingly.

However, if you type "help parent" in magic, you *will* get a brief
description of the command. This is true for all commands in magic.
You can also type "help" by itself to get a complete listing of *all*
    the magic commands.

It would be nice to have all the commands described in the "man" page,
and even nicer to have a tutorial for each of them, but that would be
    a lot of work.

BTW, when I implemented 'parent' and 'child,' I thought they would be
very useful commands. However, I never use them unless I'm looking at
someone else's layout. I find the 'xview' (same as view, but
unexpands subcells first) and my modifications to the 'box' commands
    much more useful.
