My experience with "wheel" mice is that while the wheel looks and acts
like a button, it does not map to any of the five buttons normally accepted
    by the X server.

But, I just did a search on the web and found some information on
configuring wheel mice for X11 (using the XFree86 3.3.2 (or newer) server),
at the following website (type "linux wheel mouse driver" into any search
    engine, in this case Lycos):

    	http://www-sop.inria.fr/koala/colas/mouse-wheel-scroll/

It seems that XFree86 3.3.2 has reasonably good support for wheel mice,
and only requires the correct, if somewhat obscure, settings in the
    XF86Config file.

From what I understand from reading the page, your wheel mouse of
"unknown origin" is likely to work, being from a 3rd-party vendor (not
MicroSoft) and therefore forced to comply with standards.

    						Regards,
    						Tim
