    i can answer this.  as described in various places like
    ftp://ftp.isi.edu/pub/sondeen/magic/new/README
    and/or
    ftp://ftp.isi.edu/pub/sondeen/magic/new/beta/CHANGELOG,
    
     .mag/.cif/.strm : simple rule test cases, to examine rules checked and not
     .layers : describes the cif/strm layers read/written by the techfile
     .styles : describes the 'styles' used in the techfile (for techfile hackers)
     .r : defines subcircuits for the (old way) of extracted resistors (labelled
          by special 'resistor' layers - see the CHANGELOG for how it works
          (if you need resistors)), also see test cases under beta/examples
