    Hi Svenn,

What you want to do is not entirely straightforward. Every layout needs
to be viewed with an appropriate techfile, and you cannot arbitrarily read
in CIF or GDS written by another layout tool.

Perhaps some day, Tim will add a feature to automatically generate new
planes and tiles on reading in layouts (bleah! don't forget the
    kitchen sink... :-)

Right. If you're lucky, the style used to generate your GDS will match
one of the styles provided by Jeff Sondeen (see the MOSIS web site for
    links to Magic techfiles).

I have attached a simple techfile which I use to convert to/from CIF and
GDS. (Tanner L-Edit v7.00 does not write correct GDS, and our version of
Cadence currently won't read CIF). You will need to make the following
    modifications:

    1) You will need to add to the list of planes and types any missing
layers. Don't forget to add an entry to the extract section for any plane
    you add.

    2) You will need to modify the scalefactor in the cifinput section to
suit the grid that was used to generate your GDS file.

    3) This techfile doesn't define any colors for the tiles, so if you want
to see anything, you will have to add entries to the styles section. This
is not straightforward as some colors will erase others...

    4) You might run out of planes...
